Here's a trailer for yet another film cashing in on the 2012 hype. From what I have seen, it's more complete and utter hogwash, but I am featuring this one as this is a new take on it that I hadn't heard of before.
The astronomy means the disappearance of the Sun could not be true, however many myths that have been handed down over the years are often allegories which, when correctly deciphered, do have some truth in them.
In this case it seems to me that the Maya so revered the planet Venus that they must have calculated that 2012 coincided with a transit of Venus to the Sun. The transit causes a black spot to pass across the face of the Sun and it is entirely possible that over the ages this fact has become 'corrupted' in much the same way as 'Chinese Whispers' alters the original message that was being conveyed. The Transit of Venus also produces something called the Black Drop Effect. Whilst the size and distance of Venus from Earth could, in no way produce the phenomenon we see at Solar eclipses - when the Moon appears to either completely cover the Sun or, as in today's eclipse, leave a ring around the Moon (known as an annular eclipse).
Nevertheless it is visible to the eye and a small part of the Sun is blacked out by Venus in 2012. (see pic at top) We won’t notice any decrease of sunlight during the transit but you can see how the whole notion of a black spot could have got misconstrued over the ages to become 'the sun is blacked out'. This happening in 2012 is too coincidental to this man's take on it in the video to be dismissed.
The Maya Calendar is thought to have begun in 3114BC (no one knows for sure - it's just a nifty bit of retrospective calculation that appears to have stuck). This list of 5 millennia of Venus transits reveals there was a transit in 3108BC
Although we last had a transit of Venus to the Sun in 2004 (they come in pairs) the last one before that was in 1882 so they are rare. If you want to read all about the transit this site is great. Use the links on the side of the page when you get there too. One of them allows you to calculate what the transit will look like from your location and another gives you a fascinating set of instructions from 1882 of exactly how to view it through a telescope.
A transit typically lasts from 7 to 9 hours but they can last much, much less or even not happen at all, just missing the Sun, in which case they are known as missing transits. How much you see of it depends on your location but one other interesting fact, which totally supports my theory that it is this to which the Maya gentleman in the video could be (unknowingly) referring to, is that in that part of the world the Sun will set before the transit is complete therefore the Sun and Venus effectively make the world go dark together from their perspective in 2012!
The transit will be wholly visible from eastern Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, the Philippines, China, Korea, Japan, the islands of the western Pacific Ocean, Hawaii, Russia, Alaska and north-west Canada. In the far north the entire transit can also be seen, since the sun does not set. From eastern Canada, the United States, Central America, the Caribbean and northwest South America only the first part of the transit will be visible, because first contact occurs in the afternoon of June 5 and the sun sets while the transit is still in progress.
To my mind THIS transit of Venus is the event of 2012. It is June 5/6 is when people should be holding gatherings - not 21.12.2012.
From my extensive research, I still cannot rule out that the Maya knew of the return of a long term comet sometime around 2011/2013, or that some kind of electromagnetic changes may raise the vibrational frequencies of our Universe, in turn perhaps affecting our consciousness, but an extinction event it is not.
On that point at least myself and this Mayan chap agree! If you fancy hanging around until April 05 15232AD though then we'd really have something to jump up and down about. Take a look at this animation (obviously you have to click to play once you land on this page). The simultaneous occurrence of a transit of Venus and a total Solar Eclipse! Now that's really something that would strike awe and wonder into one's heart. Talking of which.............
Venus transits, like eclipses come in series. There are ten series, each with a distinct start and end date. Each member of a series is separated by 88,756 days or 243 years (= sum of 8 + 105.5 + 8 + 121.5 years). The one's in the 3114BC range were series 3 and 4 the upcoming 2012 one is series 7. This means the 2012 one is linked to one on JUNE 3RD 1769 a year also very much linked into the founding of America. It is also a date when a mere 5 hours later there was a total Solar eclipse! The significance of the planet Venus to the Masonic fraternity and the Mystery Traditions in general cannot be overlooked - she mentioned cryptically in advance of her still in progress book!.

Just in case you haven't heard today's annular eclipse is historic. It is the longest until Dec 23 3043 which is 1033 years ahead. Lots of my fellow bloggers are covering it in detail so check out Astrodispatch to find them.
